Hive (In Support Of Teachers)

The hive is quiet -
no life behind
its honeycomb windows.

Bells ring on the hour -
shrill, punctual, pointless
echoes in the hollowed halls.

The drones are gone.

Too many hours at nectarless flowers.
Too many gardens promised, but never planted.

The drones are gone.

On strike.

Because honey at half-price is bitter,
and a man, once stung, might better tend his bees.

A very rough poem for Marian's "School's Out" prompt at Real Toads.  Oklahoma's teachers are the lowest paid in the nation.  If legislation is not passed addressing education funding and teacher pay, our teachers will walk out on April 2nd.  They have my full support.

I can feel the promise of those empty halls. It doesnt look promising for teachers, given the current administration. Sigh.

I am grateful for the education I received from the teachers in the public school I attended...even a poor education, is better than none. Can't help but wonder, what is this world coming to?

I think teacher pay is not a federal but a state issue - and I think NC is near the bottom too. I have friends who are teachers and are exhausted - my heart breaks and yes, I support them 100% as education is so very important.

Pay in NC and VA are state regulated. State workers including teachers are always paid low wages. the state workers and teachers have't had a raise in three years a COLA - we haven't had merit raises in many years. And many of the teachers in this part of VA are woefully under qualified and indifferent. It is sad. So different from when I was young, when teachers were respected and listened to. One of the several times I wish for "the old days".

The comparison between bee colony collapse and the failure of public education is apt. May the hive survive those pestilential legislators worshiping DeVos.

Thank you for enlightening me on the plight of these teachers. (And to think that in the UK, we're still discussing how it would look if teachers were armed.) This is awful.. and for what it's worth, I'm in support of them. fair is fair. Love the poem.

The low pay on teachers seems to be universal... the image of the beehive without honey is apt.

Write on! I can't understand why any state doesn't want to pay teachers, but Oklahoma is insanely negligent.

South African teachers are some of the lowest paid in the world! But we cannot leave our bees unattended. Education brings freedom from oppression.

Yes! Wise to better tend those bees, great metaphor. I really appreciate this, MZ.
