Hard to believe it's been a year.
How quickly childhood disappears!
There's hints of woman in you, girl.
Glimpses of grown-up that the world
sees where I still see bedtime tears.
You wear my shoes, and you're damn near
tall as me when I pull you near.
I know that every bud unfurls -
it's hard to believe it's been a year.
I've whispered warnings in your ear.
Taught right from wrong through all these years.
Kissed your face and brushed your curls.
Fastened diapers. Fastened pearls.
You're beat and breath to me my dear.
Hard to believe it's been another year.
I wrote this for Baby Puppy's 13th birthday. Hard to believe she'll be 14 next month.
For The Tuesday Platform at Real Toads.

This line really choked me up:Fastened diapers. "Fastened pearls."
So powerful, Kell.
I really like the lines quoted by Jericho. They show the passage of time, especially through a parent's eyes, so well... And I love the tone of the entire poem--sweet, real, tender.
to have, to hold, and to let go. tender stuff
This is absolutely lovely... and I agree the fastened diapers fastened pearls says so much..
Time just flies. I can't believe it'll be my daughter's first wedding anniversary at the end of this month. In my head she's still wearing my shoes! my heart strings have been well and truly tugged by the lines:
'Kissed your face and brushed your curls.
Fastened diapers. Fastened pearls'.
Perfect, esp the diapers and pearls juxtaposition.
This is soo incredibly eloquent, MZ!
I liked the repeating line about how hard it is to believe it's been a year. It keeps the reader focused.
Just beautiful...words only a Mama could write.
Aah... memories are fashioned on this. Thanks for the feelings.
Almost fourteen. Unbelievable. She has such a loving mother, I have great confidence in Baby Puppy. Even through those perilous teen years. I, too, loved the fastening diapers and pearls lines........sigh. Doesnt seem so long ago my youngest was fourteen - and now she's forty! Wow.
A beautiful marking of the milestone. (My sympathies for what's to come. 14-year-old girls, in my observation...! I hope she proves an exception.)
A mother's heart is always in pre-empting unnecessary distractions against the curiosity of innocence!

"I know that every bud unfurls" is gorgeous.
Be careful. You'll blink again and she'll be 30.
how does that happen?
and then fourteen,
next fifteen,
by sixteen they'd like to be gone.
You've been there.
..
I have similar sentiments (with different details, of course) about my son. He will be 12 this summer and is slowly becoming his own [young] man. It is both fun and scary to see your kid growing up.
Love the line about diapers and pearls. Baby Puppy is definitely a caution.
Wait! This was about a puppy? You had me fooled! My Ninja (kitten) just turned 1 on May 6th. She's so much bigger it's amazing how fast they get big.
