Fall Comes To A Football Town

The band brasses through the Star Spangled Banner.
The PA crackles a prayer.
The whole town is there
sweating blood
in the stands.

Cheerleaders "Go Team!" and tumble
through kick-off, passes, and fumbles.
Half-time brings
the homecoming queen
to be crowned

and kissed
hard and hot
on the mouth

by the quarterback -
Touchdown!

Somebody finally scored.

For The Tuesday Platform at Real Toads

Quite a fun (or not fun, perhaps in nine months) twist at the end.

Better than a touch-down. The q-back will find his way around. No dearth of choice!

I heard an NPR piece yesterday about how gamblers love the thrill of almost winning -- two out of three of those cherries on the slot machine -- as much of winning, because they're addicted to the illusion of control. Touchdown! As if that fills a small town's, a self's woe hole.

Ha, loved it! In my high school days (waaaay back when) it seemed to be that the homecoming queen was always the quarterback's girl.

Oh, how you captured the fevered pitch that is high school football!

It sounds like an iconic time of year.

You captured everything -including the impatient teenage horniness - perfectly.

But...you left out them having to get married and live in a trailer behind her parents' house.
