Calling Myself

I never wanted to be an astronaut
though I craved the stars.

Didn't dream of dance;
still, I learned to tiptoe.

I call myself a poet,
but I'm just a vessel

channeling spirits to breathe life
into my own.

Agreed there are many things we do but we could never call ourselves professionals.
I doubt I will ever consider myself a poet tho it is life breathing.

"Just a vessel", my ass.

You're one of the few writers I know of who has earned the title of "poet" and is also too damned good and alive for such a pretentious and moribund title. - Mosk

Absolutely beautiful. And so true.

Whoa! As always, you totally nail it, as well and succinctly as it can be said. So true about being a vessel channeling the words that come through. At the best of times, not often, I feel that way.

Awesome, MZ. The Muse is quite the Trickster, no?

If I knew where my poems came from, I'd go live there forever. My (few & far between) best poems are the ones I didn't plan, edit or conjure...they just seemed to flow through me, as your poem so beautifully describes. We had an almost cool, low humidity morning today here in the swamp & it made me want to write poems. Go figure. ;-) xo

I call myself a poet,
but I'm just a vessel.... I feel that way, though usually I say I write poetry not that I am a poet. But it sure feels good when that sweet elixir pours from that vessel.

With the way you as vessel shape the incoming spirit, you make selves and characters and astronauts and stars and more. You are a very special vessel indeed!

A vessel is a container of something useful of great potential which many value highly. This applies to the words that you write.

I do like your philosophy, MZ. The idea of being a vessel is definitely not unappealing.

What a wonderful philosophy .. To be a vessel, to communicate - great purpose.

Love this. It's so true, for us all. We are vessels. Our label doesn't matter.

The spirit must be a poet than, since poetry is what it has made.

yes, i conider myself but a vessel where for a short time in the realm of time breath resides and light is reflected to form the body of my being. i claim it not for it belongs to the universe.

i love the notion of a 'vessel'.

gracias for sharing

You're not just a vessel, poet. You're the God's honest.

Sometimes we have to let others decide what we are, as we are too self-conscious of our own high standards , our unattainable goals and pitiless self-criticism. My verdict is: "You're a poet" :-)
