Mother's Tongue

My daughter speaks her mother's tongue -
a sugar syrup southern drawl
that softens words that shouldn't be said,
shouldn't be said at all.

A sugar syrup southern drawl
that hints at lemon in the tea,
but softens words that shouldn't be said;
she learned that from me.

Oh, the things we pass on to our kids, and the manner in which those things return to us. Circle, for sure.

It's her mother's tongue and she's learned it well.

I like the bit of acid in here--especially softened on the tongue!

YOU sometimes say things that shouldn't be said?

I'm shocked. ;)

Seriously, in eight short lines you--as usual--packed quite a whallop. A softened whallop, but a whallop nonetheless.

How good is the gift, how infernal? Mothers don't get to choose, and daughters have to decide if "softening" is a way to thrill, or kill, or create most excellent poems.

Love this. If I have to be slapped let it be with a velvet glove. A toast to Southern Women!
(I didn't do this prompt so you don't have to come callin'.)

So much packed into a few words. Love the structure and the lyrical quality. Diplomacy is such an important skill to have. And here it is, celebrated in all its glory with the southern drawl. *Smiles*
