Where Night Falls

From streets lined with bed bound zinnias
to back roads of broomweed and clay -
where night falls

a woman waits for a lover.

From wine wisp sips of the iris
to a scissortail smoke in the hay -
where night falls

a woman waits for a man.

The crisp details broken up by that expectant feel of the waiting lines is exquisite, Mz!

Sharp and tight imagery ~ I like the subtle change of the waiting for a lover, for a man ~

Herein lies the art of the poet - when words do more than they say.

This makes me think of how expectations change over time. Like, earlier on in a relationship, a lover might be what blows your hair back. But over time, you grow to realize how badly you need a person to be more than a lover, but to also man up, and be all that that means.

I agree that the change from "lover" to "man" adds layers and possibilities that make this even more interesting than it already was.

I adore the second line, as well as the fifth and sixth. Gorgeous.

I would advise anyone reading your poem aloud to take their time .. that second stanza is a real tongue twister! I enjoyed it immensely.
