All Skate

Saint Ludwina, patron saint of skaters

Saint Lidwina, hear my prayer.
It's Sunday night, and Monday's there
just the other side of sleep -
the starting line of another week.

I spent the day in preparation
and making lists of veneration.
I've oiled the wheels and mapped the race.
Don't let me fall flat on my face!

And, Lidwina, keep my laces tight.
Give me balance, give me right
of way as I pick up speed;
I've never learned to stop, you see.

Lidwina is the patron saint of ice skaters and roller skaters.

For Kenia's prompt at Real Toads.  Also submitted to Poetry Pantry.

Oh if just Saint Ludwina had blessed us with ice skating this year... but alas the winter has been way too warm ... way too warm...Maybe I should pray next week.

Lidwina really exists? What a tribute---and plea!

Really- a patron saint of skaters? Only the catholics! And only you could write a fine poem using this little know info.

What a cool way to gear up for the week ahead by asking the good saint to bless the rollers!

You've got to be kidding me, is there such a saint?

Are you a skater?

I love the flow of it, the fun and lightness in your writing, always. :)

Thanks for writing to my challenge.

Great cadence in this MZ, like the rhythm of skating itself, and excellent work with the metaphor, particularly as you wind it down. I also really like'... the other side of sleep'--that really is a Monday thing, lurking like that.

This made me smile......never learned to stop! I watched a cool video yesterday about an older man who gave up his high paying job and fancy car to - ROLLERBLADE - he is the happiest man ever, skating is his bliss. He holds his arms wide, like flying, and sticks one leg out behind him and coasts for miles.......

There are patrons for some pretty obscure things; Lidwina is a new one on me! I can well believe that you don't know how to stop, MZ.

I leave you alone for several years, and you co-author two books and have a wonderful poetry blog, MZ! I have much to catch up on!

Don't mind me if I sound excited...I feel as though I'd never left.

May your creative juices continue to overflow, MZ!

Me, am catching up after losing my mother and still caring for my 86-year-old father. But that never kept the writer down! ;))

Sunday night is definitely the down side of Sunday, and this approaches it with great and mordant humor! Thanks, MZ. k.

Ah yes, stopping is the hard part!

Nice prayer. An athlete knows just when to slow down and speed up. I hope Saint Lidwina blesses you with divine intuition. I like this line-
'just the other side of sleep.'

I think this Saint pushed me along a windy, frozen lake once. :) I loved this, Mama Zen.

I love ice skating, but don't get enough opportunities to practice.. If I could just.. know straight away and balance perfectly! Ha!

Exuberant! Such fun.

I looked her up--beyond your play on the roller skating competition and the prayers of a bungler is the history of this 15 year old as having--perhaps--multiple sclerosis. Imagine staying the course against such odds? I like your saint. May this week's rounds be successful!

Good intentions can still come to a screeching halt! This is just fantastic - pokes light fun in the perfect spots and also gives a valuable lesson.

dang, this is so cool. I needed to pray to her, wish I knew to, back in the day at the local skating rink. or skateboard park, when I broke my elbow ~
