The Rabbit Bard

Luna and Shaman Rabbit by Toril Fisher

Silver skin moon,
whetstone in the sky.
Sweeten the hickory spit.
Sharpen the hunter's knife.

White, my tender belly.
Red, my fearful eye.
Silver skin moon,
whetstone in the sky.

Inspired by Margaret's prompt at Real Toads.

Cut me to the quick. If only that hunter was only Cupid. But no, that one also pinpoints hearts.

Oh, the tender belly, the moonlit night... I hope the hunter stayed his knife.

Fried rabbit for supper!

This is wicked good, MZ. An incantation, a prayer and a voice from the Furs, and a chilling acceptance of just who the killer is. One of your best, imo.

The sad truth of? The food chain?
Poor little rabbit. I do not eat rabbit because of who they are. I suppose even the Easter Bunny influenced my tastes. My Dad hunted and Grandma cooked the rabbits. Mom would not allow them in her house.

p.s. Every time I see a truck load of pigs going to market I 'almost' decide to become a vegetarian.

Run, rabbit, run! Who else would have thought of the moon as a whetstone in the sky? That's really clever. But...you swiped the art I was going to write for! :-P

Aside from the fact that this flows beautifully and you made me see the moon in a completely new way, I am also hungry for rabbit stew. ;-)

That moon in the sky makes it possible for man to see so much better at night. What made me shiver is the almost lullaby quality to it…

Robert Bourne said...

it definitely had a lullaby or chant to it.. or maybe a haunting rhythm at least to a rabbit...

like a chant, I love it ~

Wicked wonderful. (I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rabbit is safe.)

This sounds like the hunted honouring the hunter - cool, cool, cool

The sadness of it, you bring through your words, makes me renew my promise to never ever hurt an animal of any kind

I'll save my exclamation points, else they'd just fill the page, MZ ~
