Woman, Draw The Shades

Woman, draw the shades
and loose the owls
to measure night

from wing beat
to heartbeat ceasing.
And salt the bed

lest I start dreaming
that I, too,
can fly.

What a mesmerizing opening stanza.

I'm envisioning an assortment of meanings in the first line, considering that "draw" and "shades" mean a variety of things.

So you're encouraging this woman to keep you tucked away indoors, lest you fly away forever. Maybe it's your mother. Maybe she's mean, evil, or abusive.

Or maybe this is a different sort of woman, one whom you're playfully challenging to adequately entertain you, or you might disappear.

Or maybe you're seeing a witch, getting her to cast for/with you to accomplish your dirty deeds.

Who knows? I think anything is possible between these lines.

Is this the sort of "salt" you're asking for?

Owls are not to be trifled with. As for dreams of flight, why not?
