Shine

If you need something from somebody always give that person a way to hand it to you.

--- from The Secret Life of Bees
If a man
offers you a hand
take it so he can
shine for Jesus.

Even the strong
have times when it all goes wrong
and need someone to come along
shining for Jesus.

So understand
there's no shame in a circumstance
that gives another a chance
to shine for Jesus.

And, the time will come
when you're the one
doing unto as you would have done
and shining for Jesus.

For Susie's prompt at Real Toads.  Also submitted to Poetry Pantry.  Please note: for maximum enjoyment, sing this like you're Aretha Franklin.

I especially like your Aretha note here, MZ. And you are right -- to allow one's self to be helped is giving a great boon to the helper-not nearly enough appreciated. Very cool rhythms here too . Thanks. k.

Amen, sister. Such a poignant example of brotherly love - and a message which needs to spread from man(woman) to man(woman).

Amen. I am not always that generous, to others or to myself. I love how you spin this graciousness.

I thought that was a very strong poem. The language had a good rhythm to it.

Cool idea to sing it like Aretha Franklin - which, given the state of my bronchial tubes, I could just about do right about now!

Couldn't I just shine for Freya instead? ;_) There is indeed a strong gospel cadence to this, and the idea of receiving so others can give is sound with or without the Big J.

I'm singing it like Aretha...The gospel according to MZ. Love how you speak it! Thanks for taking part in the challenge.

I love the brush with the sacred shining. I can hear Aretha adding some earthy heart sounds to this beautiful poem.

Yes, in our pride sometimes we do deprive others the blessing of helping. Wisdom here.

Right. And if I could sing like Aretha Franklin, would I be blogging? LOL
Seriously, I can imagine Aretha singing like Aretha, and this would sound great.
I wanted to use that quotation, and I thought and thought and thought, but couldn't think of how to say what I wanted to say.
However, I do know that being allowed to help another person is a gift, so I should be kind to those who might want to help me, instead of shrugging them off and hobbling along on my own.
"Go away, I don't need you," whether voiced or not, is a cruel response. "Thank you, it's so good of you to offer, and I'd really appreciate your help" is much, much nicer.

It needs to be in Aretha's big voice, but it's also so true, and so in the spirit of the book. Loved it!

You've said it, and Amen to that!!!

I'll sing, but just in my head. I can't channel Aretha no matter how hard I try. But Jesus, we can all channel his teachings.

dogs weep when I sing so I'll just have to take your word for it, MZ
