Thanking A Veteran

If you'd stand against war
like you line up for iPhones;
if you'd make peace the platform
and not just a plank;
if you'd only spend soldiers
like a miser spends money,

I could be the last veteran
you have to thank.

Note: I am not a veteran.  This is just a bit of idealism in their honor.

This is why George W. Bush's needless war in Iraq offends me to the core. So many people killed or injured or displaced for really no reason except to satisfy one politician's ego.

I *am* a veteran. I wasn't crazy about it when I was serving, but I have come to see, with time, that my service was meaningful.

I am no fan of war
Nor do i sleep in the flag believing might makes right.
But i do honour and respect those that have served and defended and offer my gratitude.
But yes, one last veteran of all wars would suit me fine.

Mama Zen--

What a wonderful poem. This needs to be framed and hung in veterans' hospitals, in the White House, in state capitols.

You made great points here, MZ.

I'd get in line.

strong message within this...our leaders will have much to answer for one day...we may never see it but...

Yes. I totally love this. Let's send the leaders to war instead.

This is a philosophical piece. I like it!

When Afghanistan suddenly became Iraq and fake reports of WMDs, I thought, why not put Saddam and Bush in the same room and let them duke it out, if it's such a grudge match?

I'm a pacifist who supports our troops 100%. They felt a calling I will never hear, and I respect them greatly, because they are out there, eating sand. I'm getting impatiend with the president to stop the Bush War in Afghanistan.

Very well written piece, and so thought provoking.... PEACE, Amy

Short, sharp and direct - just as a good 'political' poem should be (and what a rarity they are!). A touch of Brecht here, but your own voice loud and clear!

Lives are just another form of money, which is just a permutation of power when it reaches the immense levels of wealth controlled by government and war profiteers...and they are only misers when it comes to their own hides. Well said, MZ.

A worthy goal, I'm with you in this. When will we grow out of the belief that war is the best way to handle conflict? Soon I pray.

Oh so painfully true. Good one for the day.

Absolutely. Drives me crazy. (I'm not saying I'm so great here - not at all - but the lack of attention to the men and women actually serving in all of these wars has been terrible.) I frankly think if there were a draft, that would also greatly cut down on people's enthusiasm for foreign involvements. k.
