If it is only a Poem,
then I am Blameless,
no matter the racing of my heart.
I can name this aching Admiration
and be no better or worse
than others who read your verse
and sigh the same.
This flush that stains my cheeks
speaks only to Envy
of your gift so rich and wicked
that it shames my paltry skill
for necessary Fictions.

oh i am sure there are those that read you with the same envy...smiles...
necessary fictions....and interesting turn of phrase that...
I can only repeat what Brian has written! Terrific as always.
Och, aye! I know this feeling, as we all must, in the presence of gifted writers.
Yes, me too - the awe when one reads a really gifted writer, who writes on a level all her own.
There are two for me. The words sing from the page. Sighhhh!
Yes, some writers have the mouth drop effect on me. But I think all that write, do so from their heart and soul, so I wouldn't consider anyone's work paltry.
I feel the same way, time and again, while reading poetry online. It requires courage to put words onto paper, and even more so to put them on public display. Love this poem!
Paltry skill... I think not!
I feel so small in this world of poetic giants...and YOUR work is so creatively inspiring!
I disagree. Every piece of writing has its own beauty! I can't remember the last time I read anything I considered 'paltry.'
I feel like this almost every time I read one of the wonderful poets who wander this corner of cyberspace. Including you, MZ.
ah, this is something which happens to me every monday! :)
Beautiful verse MZ. I love the gamut of emotions here, from Blame, to Admiration, to flushing of the cheeks to Envy and Shame. Amazing how you weaved so much in here. I totally get the theme here, I feel like this reading several poets, which you are one of them, as no matter the style or form, you bring it all each time, and many times a wit and bite that most can't hope to muster. Outstanding piece. Thanks
Sometimes its like I get my ass kicked everday....I train and train, but its never enough. It is enough however to walk the path with all of you and see through your eyes...even if they are bluer than mine.
The use of capitols is intriguing, gives it a classic feel, and also seems a bit like code--it's good to be blameless, but painful to live in fiction. Another well turned out and sharp piece, MZ.
Oh my..I have felt that same envy when reading your work. I toss my simplistic writes to the wind and hope they will land somewhere between acceptance and appreciation.
What Susie said :)
I think your generous spirit shines MZ, along with your terrific words.
And every writer is unique and much appreciated ~
This is beautiful, Kelli. There is nothing paltry, or simple, about it. I knew, from the first time I read a poem you had written, that you had a gift. It's on fine display right here.
Love that title! ;-)
And that is why I have a Tumblr blog subtitled "Poems I wish I'd written"... because every so often I stumble upon something that is so amazingly written, that I can't help but be awed.
As you're one of the writers I admire most for mastery of the language and the purity of your vision, forgive me if I don't cry you a river because you envy someone else's talent-I'm too busy coveting your talent. Great poem, MZ.
oh stop writing poems about me! er, did i write this about you? ;)
xoxo achy truthy loveliness, just as i expect when i visit you.
I feel exactly the same about this one!
Ah , but such excellence inspires .... as you
have inspired me to keep trying for quality.
Ha! We all feel the same way about you. K.
Oh I feel the same way you wrote about your poetry...this is really well done and we all can relate!
