Daddy wore a uniform.
Daddy fought the fires.
Daddy was a hero,
but my only desire
was Daddy to come home
so I could crawl up on his knee.
Daddy was a hero
for everyone but me.
sad. but you really have a deep character sketch started here- both for the speaker and for the daddy- great job really painting so much about their wants and needs in so few lines. Great job. Thanks
There's a saying in the rooms of AA: "You want to know how my program is going, ask my spouse." It's easy to be a hero out there, wearing the hero mask. It can't hold up at home in those intimate spaces that call the courage of duration. Simply, well and amply put. - B

And this is the price every hero must pay: the people who need him the most are the ones who must do without.
oh... this really packs a punch!
And that's a damn shame. Heroism should start at home, if you ask me.
Thanks for being part of my prompt, MZ!
A beautiful write MZ! We often ourselves forget of a greater obligation at home!

You do know how to say it all -- and beautifully as well, MZ!

No matter the profession, I imagine a lot of little girls can say this about daddy. Very poignant.
Beautifully told about the other side of heroes.
I love the sing-song nursery rhyme style you used. It makes the subject more powerful.
Poignant and perfectly written. One can see the little girl, longing for her daddy.
Goosebumps here. A powerful poem. Fathers and daughters and sadness.

Firemen, soldiers and cops--hard on the families, especially kids.
Oh gosh, this is a tear jerker! Beautiful
Touching...
you touch on a lot of themes here....well done!
So sad, MZ, but so well said.

The public versus the private face. Neatly put.

Sad! I do wonder how many heroes to other people neglect being heroes to those who matter most...their children!
Very nice MZ ~ This kind of job takes its toll on family life specially children ~
Great work ~
Ouch, and yet one more good reason that I'm no longer a fire fighter cause I'm a Mama! :-) Great write my friend.
ugh....def all to real...out saving the world while the home front dies...
Such a sad circumstance :(
So poignantly true...
Oh that's sad.
The reality for so many families...beyond sad.
