Truth

I've made a home
of the sticks and stones
that were thrown at me.
Stitched a sampler of the insults;
it hangs above my bed.
I've choked down homemade venom
with olives and vermouth.
I've been a good girl, Santa.
That's the truth.

I've pretended ecstasy out of kindness.
I've pretended kindness
when ecstasy would rub it in.
I haven't said a tenth of the things I've thought
that were hateful and rude.
I've been a good girl, Santa.
That's the truth.

Fabulous poem. (And where can I order that cross-stitched sampler? It goes so well with my attitude!)

Santa will know if you are a good girl or not, whether you tell the truth or not. I think Santa will proclaim you a 'good girl.'

Merry Christmas, Mama Zen!

I haven't said a tenth of the things I've thought, man this is what I am afraid of when I have dementia one day and it all comes spilling out. They may be hanging that sampler on my wall at the old folks home. Now go have another sip of egg nog, you deserve it.

When someone lets loose with a particularly good string of obscenities, I sometimes claim to want a sampler that says that. You've done it!

You are the best girl, whether you are naughty or nice or some place in between. And THAT's the truth.

Merry Christmas, MZ.

An adult has to redefine 'goodness' on her own terms!

Ooh, I like this a lot. Homemade venom choked down by olives and vermouth- awesome line. And not having said the tenth of what you thought- so, so true. Great job. Thanks

perfect!...of all the traits I can admire in a person, honesty tops the list and I believe you've spoken as such

restraint is a difficult choice

Merry Christmas to you and yours, MZ. And I know just what you mean--whenever I'm accused of being bitchy I always tell the fool in question--'you have no idea what I *really* wanted to say.' ;_)

I read your poem and pic with a smile that's been missing for days. Merry holidays to you, what ever way you need to make them merry.

I want that sampler to hang in the guest bedroom where my monster in law stays! I loved your poem! And I feel your pain in choking back all that venom you'd love to spew and had to choke back!

I want to steal this and put it on my blog. This speaks to me. :)

"Pretended kindness when ecstasy would rub it in" has sort of a Dorothy Parker feel that goes well with the vermouth. (Sounds like a fairly crap date, actually.)

Love the underlying attitude here... I especially like the first stanza.

wow, this doesn't strike me as funny at all, more like an exorcism of sorts. santa surely knows your goodness!

A great, sardonic poem and a wonderful surprise picture to head it up.
